If you are planning to undergo Lasik surgery to fix a vision problem, there are certain things that you need to remember prior to the procedure. Also keep in mind that Lasik surgery is usually performed to treat near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. More serious eye problems may require a different type of corrective surgery. If there are aspects of the procedure that are still unclear to you, you should take the time to learn more about Lasik surgery before you fully commit to it.

Here are a few reminders before you go through Lasik surgery:

1) Consult with a doctor and an ophthalmologist first before you make your decision. You need to do this especially if you’re currently suffering from another illness or if you are taking medications. There’s the risk that the surgery might interfere with the illness or medications. You should also be aware that Lasik surgery is only used to fix nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

2) Always follow pre-surgery instructions. Your eye doctor will usually provide you with a list of things you shouldn’t do the week before your scheduled surgery. It’s important that you follow these instructions. For instance, if the doctor tells you not to wear contact lenses a week before the surgery, do it. Your cornea has to be in its natural shape during the surgery.

3) Use eye drops before and after surgery. These eye drops will be given to you by your eye doctor. Their role is to prepare your eyes for the surgery. Post-surgery, the eye drops help your cornea heal quicker.

4) Visit your ophthalmologist for check-ups after the surgery. If you feel like the surgery hasn’t improved your vision or if you experience side effects, you need to have your eyes checked immediately.

Lasik surgery is quick and mostly painless. The actual procedure will usually take just a few minutes of your time. There are not many side effects associated with the procedure but if you experience something like itchiness and blurry vision, you must have your eyes checked as soon as possible.
